Working on these short form documentaries for Red Hat has been so enlightening and engaging. “Starting Small” and its supplementary story, “Open Hardware” is a collection of stories of individuals in Chile using DIY open source hardware and software to learn more about climate change and their impact on the local environment.
This was one of my first dual language projects, and it was a nice challenge to think through motion graphics sequences in ways that didn’t depend on either language to tell the visual story.
In addition to getting to stretch my illustration skills, I made border and frame elements from scanned and inked linocuts.
Crafted a typeface for the first time - the style was influenced by local Chilean type designers. I turned this into a working font file for easier use in post-production and for other digital promotions. Learning how to make my own ligatures - c’mon! How cool is that?
